The pointing system we used for pivotal tracker consisted of the following points and criteria: 1 point - A user story that could be completed with a trivial number of steps and little complexity. An example of a single point would be creating a view for static information. 2 points - A user story with more steps and complexity and may rely on more intensive computation or reasoning, as well as possibly relying on extensive database information. An example would be creating a student discussion forum for adding new messages and retrieving them. 3 points - Conceptually difficult and may require new tools that have not been previously discovered. An example would be searching for universities, which requires the data to be scraped from the web.
